Why Has My Car GPS Tracker Stopped Updating Its Location?
Share
If your car GPS tracker stopped updating its location, start with the last reported time and place. A tracker needs power, a usable location fix and a mobile connection to send a fresh position. The app also needs to display the data it receives. Checking each part in order can help you find the cause without disturbing the installation.
Car GPS tracker stopped updating: a practical checklist
Work through these checks before assuming the device has failed:
- Read the timestamp. Check when the last position was recorded, not just where the map pin sits. A parked car may legitimately show the same location for some time; an old timestamp after a drive needs investigation.
- Refresh the app. Confirm your phone has internet access, reopen the app and check that you are viewing the correct vehicle. If you use more than one phone, compare what each shows.
- Check reporting behaviour. Some trackers report differently when a vehicle is parked or asleep. Look at the device settings and recent trip history before treating a quiet parked vehicle as an outage.
- Confirm the plan is active. A tracker may have power and still be unable to send data if its connectivity or service plan has lapsed. Check your account and the GPSBob plans information.
- Consider where the car has been. Underground parking, enclosed garages and areas with weak mobile coverage can interrupt updates. Compare the last report with the car’s route and check the coverage information.
- Look for a recent power change. A flat or disconnected vehicle battery, blown fuse, loose plug or wiring work can affect the tracker. Note any servicing, battery replacement or accessory installation just before updates stopped.
- Try a normal drive in an open area. If it is safe and convenient, see whether a fresh location appears after the car is driven somewhere with a clear view of the sky and mobile reception. Allow for the device’s usual reporting interval.
What the last update can tell you
The pattern often narrows down the next step. If the last position is at home just before a vehicle battery replacement, power or installation is worth checking. If updates stop each time the car enters an underground car park and resume after it leaves, reception is a more likely explanation.
A tracker can also know roughly where it is yet be unable to send that position to the app. GPS reception and mobile data are separate parts of the journey. GPSBob trackers use standard 4G mobile coverage and a multi-network SIM that can roam across Optus, Telstra and other networks. That helps where one supported network is stronger than another, but a usable signal is still needed where the vehicle is parked or travelling.
If the app shows recent trip points but the current marker seems old, check whether the map or app has refreshed. Record both the timestamp and the displayed location when you contact support; saying only that the pin is wrong gives a technician less to work with.
Check power without disturbing the installation
For a plug-in device, such as an OBD tracker, check that it is seated properly in the vehicle’s OBD port. If another device or adaptor was recently fitted there, mention it when seeking help. Avoid forcing a connector or moving the tracker to an unfamiliar socket.
A hardwired tracker needs a suitable power supply and a sound connection. You may be able to spot an obvious vehicle battery issue or recall recent electrical work, but checking fuses and wiring is best left to someone comfortable with vehicle electrics. If the fault began after an installation change, ask the installer to inspect it. GPSBob’s installer and partner network can connect buyers with auto mechanics who can help install its products.
Do not treat a stopped location update as proof that another security feature has stopped working. Tracking reports a position; immobilisation is a separate function on products that provide it. If you have a tracker with immobilisation, check its instructions and seek support before making assumptions about either function.
When to contact support
If the tracker still does not update after the app, plan, coverage and obvious power checks, gather the device or vehicle details, the last update time, the last displayed location and what happened immediately beforehand. Include whether the car has been driven in an area with mobile coverage and whether its battery or wiring was recently worked on. A screenshot of the app can help show the problem clearly.
Contact GPSBob support with those details. They can help identify the next useful check for your device and installation. If you are choosing a replacement or fitting a tracker to another vehicle, compare the connection method and installation needs across the car GPS tracker range before buying.
